STEER WRESTLING
Also known as bulldogging, it’s the quickest event in rodeo and requires speed, balance, timing and precision. Steer wrestling involves a cowboy leaping from a horse at full gallop onto a running steer, stopping the steer and wrestling it to the ground on its side.
This is a timed event. The cowboy who wrestles a steer to the ground in the least amount of time is the winner. The cowboy starts behind a barrier on horseback and the steer is given a head start. If the barrier is broken before the steer reaches his headstart, the cowboy is given a 10 second penalty. The cowboy is assisted by a “hazer”, who rides alongside the steer and keeps the animal from veering away. This allows the cowboy to slide down the right side of his horse until he can reach the steer’s horn and dig his heels into the ground, using leverage to bring down the animal. The clock stops a soon as the animal is on the ground with all four legs pointed in the same direction.
