TEAM ROPING
The only true team event in rodeo, team roping involves two cowboys (a “header” and a “heeler”) roping the head or horns and the hind legs of a steer as quickly as possible.
This is a timed event. The longhorn steer gets a head start before the cowboys on horseback can give chase. The header is the first cowboy to go and must catch the steer around one horn and the head, both horns, or around the neck. After his portion is done, the header dallies his rope around his saddle horn. Then the heeler goes and ropes the hind legs of the steer. The clock stops when no slack is in the rope and the ropers are facing each other. A 10-second penalty is assessed if the cowboy breaks the head-start barrier, and a 5-second penalty is given if only one foot is caught.
